| News | | Alstede Farms Ready for Elizabeth Market Despite Cool Weather | | 6.12.2009 | Alstede Farms from Chester, N.J. is ready for the opening of the Elizabeth Farmers Market @ Union Square despite the cool weather and rainy spring. Customers can be rest assured that the Alstede Farm Stand will be chock full of delicious home grown, "Jersey Fresh" Produce for the Opening Day Ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, June 30th at 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. (A preview Market will be held on Tuesday, June 23rd from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
According to Alstede, the spring crop is running a tad bit behind schedule, but seasonal produce such as delicious Asparagus, Peas, Broccoli, Cucumbers and Leafy Greens will be available at the Elizabeth Farm Stand on Tuesday.
"Our Strawberries are fantastic and we have Green House Tomatoes this year for the first time," said Alstede. "We also have Summer Squash and Zucchini already and look forward to our wide variety of Currants, Gooseberries, Raspberries and Blueberries to be ready by early July," he said.
"Jersey Sweet Corn and Tomatoes will be ready later in July," he said.
Alstede is also pleased to announce that his farm stand will have new technology this season to accept Food Stamps with a state-of-the-art Electronic Transfer Benefits (EBT) machine, which is also equipped to accept major credit cards such as Discover, Mastercard and Visa.
"This new technology will expedite customer orders and allow us to move more produce and baked goods," Alstede said.
The Elizabeth Farmers Market runs from June through November 24th from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is sponsored by the Elizabeth Avenue Partnership. Alstede Farms joins The Italian Treasures Cocina and Esters Treats at the Market, which will feature Free Children's Events throughout the summer months, including face painting, clowns, music and a moon bounce. Free snow cones and cooking demonstrations will also be scheduled.
