Elizabeth - The 5th Annual Tour de Elizabeth-"Ride It, Live It, Love It" citywide bicycle tour has been set for Sunday, May 18, 2008 at 9 a.m. The 15 mile-plus ride throughout the City of Elizabeth highlights much of the City's diverse neighborhoods, historic past and new developments.
"Last year, the Tour attracted nearly 300 riders from throughout the tri-state area and showcased the great diversity and beauty of our city while allowing participants to view the many important historic sites, new developments, beautiful tree lined streets and revitalized downtown shopping districts," said Mayor Chris Bollwage. "We truly look forward to an even bigger turnout this year."
According to Jonathan Phillips, Executive Director of Groundwork Elizabeth Inc, the Historic Ride will once again feature much of the city's promising future.
"The Tour will once again pass many sites of historical significance, but also showcase the revitalized Elizabethport Section, Jersey Gardens Mall and beautiful Warinanco Park," said Phillips. "Come on out and enjoy one of the most popular city events of the year."
For the safety of the cyclists the Elizabeth Police Department will provide escorts for the length of the tour, while the City's EMT unit will be on hand with Ambulance Services and Sag Wagon Support. Water and refreshments will be supplied along the way for the cyclist's comfort. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. Cost of the ride will be $15.00 on the day of the event. For early registrants (before May 10th), the cost will be $10.00. A post ride celebration with raffles, music, entertainment and refreshments is scheduled for after the ride.
