April 2010 - Go Elizabeth!
Did you know…?

That Elizabeth was voted among the 50 greenest cities in America by Popular Science magazine? That’s right, in its February 2008 edition; the periodical sited Elizabeth as a model city leading the way for fast environmental change.

That same year, the City of Elizabeth began a “Go Green” pledge and even changed its slogan to “New Energy Creating a Greener Elizabeth” and began implementing energy conservation and green development initiatives.

And speaking of environmental change…here are some simple things you can do to become greener?

Recycling: Elizabeth has a friendly and easy way to recycle that literally comes right to your doorstep. Unplugging TV’s and appliances when not in use, changing to energy saving light bulbs and turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth or shaving are just a few of the little things we can do that will have a big impact on making Elizabeth an even greener City.

Speaking of Green, the EAP recognizes the importance of being good stewards of the earth every day and does its part by planting trees, flowers and shrubs not only to help clean the air but to add beautify and balance as well. And, the EAP will participate in the City’s annual Earth Day cleanup on Thursday, April 22nd where they join teams throughout the city in a cleanup effort where traditionally xx bags of garbage are collected over 11 square miles.

Another thing you can do to help improve your Carbon Footprint, is lessen the amount of driving you do. And with Elizabeth Avenue being a virtual “one-stop” shop, you’ll be saving fuel by the convience "The Avenue" offers in "parking your car and walking for all your shopping needs.” Oh yeah, it’s true! If you look at the Elizabeth Avenue shopping district and divide it into three categories, you’ll see there is something for everyone. We will call them the upper, middle and lower half. Park your car in the he upper half or “gateway’ region and you can shop for groceries at Giant Farm Produce Market, hardware/building supplies/lumber/paint at Standard Lumber, Jewelry at Ortiz Jewelers, Flowers at Cupido, Wedding Gowns at Bridal’s by Christina, Hair and Nails at Reina’s Beauty Salon, liquor at Payless Liquors, baked goods at Antojito Y Mas, or a delicious meal at The Little Grill. Not to mention the one-stop shop for oil change, laundry and a car wash at the gateway Mecca, Miracle Plaza.

Continue walking into the middle portion or “heart” of the district and you will find more hair salons, bakeries, restaurants and high end jewelry such as Salermo Jewelers, Leonardo Jewelers and M&S Jewelry Store. Groceries abound at Super and Casablanca Supermarkets, while Centanni’s Meats and Algarve Fish Market offer the perfect compliment to the “Jersey Fresh” produce available every Tuesday from June through November at the Farmers Market. A delicious meal at O Teimoso gives you a taste of Portugal you won’t soon forget. The Baby and Teen Gallery offers a great selection of baby furniture and you can run errands at one of three banks, Sovereign, Banco Popular and NY Community Bank and you’ll be good to go. Two pharmacies, Mabel’s and Colton’s are also located in the heart of the district as well as Early Bird Cleaners.

The lower half contains great ethnic restaurants, several barber shops, La Copa Supemarket, Hardware, Na-vet Printing, Dan’s Camera, Goldberg Glass, and Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robbins among a myriad of other choices. Alvarez Café and El Palmar offer some fine food choices while Mara Bakery or the Banana King (fruit smoothies) makes the perfect choice for dessert. So as you can see, one stroll down the Avenue and you can save gas, fuel and emission by using your legs, getting exercise, and burning calories while taking care of all your needs.

Improve your Carbon Footprint today by parking and walking on Elizabeth Avenue for all of your shopping needs and of course exercise. For a directory of businesses on the Avenue, log onto www.elizabethavenue.org.
