Located at the heart of the Elizabeth Avenue district, Union Square is where history, community, and culture intersect. Anchoring one of the oldest streets in North America, this small but powerful plaza marks a pivotal moment in the Revolutionary War - and today serves as a vibrant neighborhood gathering space.

On June 8, 1780, thousands of British troops landed in Port Elizabeth and advanced west along Elizabeth Avenue, aiming to engage General Washington and the Continental Army. At Union Square, a small group of local patriots - just fifteen Elizabeth Minutemen -mounted a courageous defense from a nearby Continental outpost. Their resistance slowed the British advance and even wounded the commanding officer, buying critical time for American forces and helping turn the tide of the campaign in New Jersey.

A Minuteman statue now stands in Union Square, commemorating that brave stand and honoring the city's role in America's fight for independence.

Union Square Market/Peterstown Farmers Market

Union Square has long been a center of neighborhood life. Since 1917, the Union Square Market - also known locally as the Peterstown Farmers Market - has served generations of residents as both a place to shop and a place to connect.

Today, that tradition continues through the Elizabeth Avenue Partnership's fresh produce market, offering seasonal "Jersey Fresh" fruits and vegetables every Tuesday from July through November (11:00 am - 6:00 pm). Much like it did more than a century ago, the market brings neighbors together around affordable food, friendly conversations, and shared community pride.

A Living Landmark

During warmer months, Union Square comes alive with activity. The Minuteman statue becomes the centerpiece for cultural events ranging from farmers markets to live music, dance performances, and neighborhood festivals. Whether it's Latin concerts, street celebrations, or simply locals gathering on a sunny afternoon, Union Square remains what it has always been - a welcoming crossroads for the Peterstown community.
