Running nearly parallel to Elizabeth Avenue, Phase 1 of the Elizabeth River Trail offers a peaceful pedestrian corridor that reconnects the city with its historic riverfront. Designed as both a recreational walkway and a cultural experience, the trail features rotating artwork by local artists while restoring visibility to the Elizabeth River - an urban waterway that played a key role in the city's early growth.
The current section begins on South Broad Street across from the Elizabeth Public Library and follows the river north to Bridge Street. Along the way, visitors can enjoy landscaped paths, interpretive elements, and public art installations that celebrate Elizabeth's diverse communities and history. It's an easy, scenic walk ideal for strolling, light exercise, or simply taking a break from the bustle of downtown.
Phase 1 represents just the first step in a much larger vision. Future phases are planned to extend the trail both south and east--eventually creating continuous connections toward Midtown Elizabeth and all the way to the Arthur Kill Bridge. Once complete, the Elizabeth River Trail will form a longer green corridor linking neighborhoods, business districts, parks, and waterfront areas.
Phase 2 is expected to add:
Together, these improvements aim to transform the river into a central public asset - supporting walkability, outdoor recreation, and local revitalization while highlighting Elizabeth's natural and cultural heritage.
Whether you're exploring on foot or just looking for a quiet place to unwind, the Elizabeth River Trail offers a refreshing perspective on the city - and a glimpse of an even more connected waterfront future.
