Founded in the 1660s, Snyder Academy stands at the crossroads of Elizabeth's early education and Revolutionary-era history. The original academy school on this site educated two future rivals – Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr – years before their famous duel in Weehawken. While it's uncertain whether they met here as students, both men went on to shape the nation: Hamilton as the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, and Burr as the country's third Vice President.

Today, Snyder Academy combines its remarkable past with modern purpose. The newly restored Classical Revival auditorium hosts performances and private events, while exhibits and tours explore New Jersey life from colonial times through the American Revolution. Located beside the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabeth, the Academy also serves as a community hub offering educational programs, meeting space, and cultural programming.
